Not More Sleaze, Please?

By Locke | November 20, 2008

There are few things I found positive about the Obama election.  But one of them was that at least we wouldn’t have the “sleaze” factor we had with the Clintons.  But alas, it has come back to haunt us again with the Eric Holder trial balloon.  For me, it’s one thing to pardon someone when the indictments or convictions are in question, like say Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean, but it’s another thing altogether to pardon someone who has no redeeming value or even a question about their guilt.

This is what Eric Holder did when he facilitated a pardon for Marc Rich with President Clinton.  C’mon, this guy was on the FBI’s top most wanted list!  Couple the pardon with the impropriety of Rich’s ex-wife’s sizable donation to Clinton’s presidential library, and what you have is, well, sleaze.  I find it even more fascinating that Holder apologized for something for which he said he played no part. And we should not forget that Holder played a role in the pardon of the FLAN members, a known terrorist group.  He did all of this by circumventing the standard procedure of running all pardon applicants through the U.S Attorney’s office.   You know, one of those 11th hour, back-room deals.

So, we’re supposed to be OK with this appointment?  For Attorney General no less.  I think not.   Please Senator Obama, spare us the sleaze please.

I wanted to comment on your blog in general.

It looks great. I plan to visit often and comment.

Yes, I know who Demosthenes was. He was an orator in Athens.

Technically you are correct about the original Demosthenes; however, the Demosthenes of whom I refer here is quite a different one. Unfortunately, it refers to the “geek” sci-fi part of me in a set of novels written back in the 80s. The first was titled “Enders Game” where the story of Demosthenes and Locke began. These novels were written by Orson Scott Card.

As the story goes, the world was in strife, and two brilliant children (brother and sister) adopted the pseudonyms of Demosthenes and Locke so the public would not know their age. They began “blogging” on the net in a intellectual way that inspired the world. They gathered a huge following, which eventually resulted in changing the world.

I have no illusions of being able to change the world with this blog, I just thought it was just clever enough to use as a pseudonym with just enough mystery to most, but an inside joke to sci-fi readers.

I am an avid reader and my interests include nearly every genre. While not a fast reader, I do manage to muddle through 1-2 books a week. I mention this only so I don’t get pigeon-holed totally as a sci-fi dweeb.
