Fairness Doctrine

By Demosthenes | November 13, 2008

Despite my worries that our country is in trouble, I still believe it’s the best place on earth.  After all, we still have free speech.  But we’re dangerously close to losing some of that now.  The Fairness Doctrine supported by some real heavyweight liberals in congress is now much closer to a reality.

The bottom line?  They want to limit political speech on the radio, simply because the free market doesn’t support liberal dialog.  Since when does our right to free speech mean it can only exist in the marketplace of ideas if the actual marketplace supports it?  I guess if liberal talk shows can’t sustain themselves financially, then our right to political free speech must be tempered.

The logic applied here is non-existent, which is why this idea is so transparent.  If they really believe this is necessary, then shouldn’t they be monitoring what is said in the print media, or television, or on our college campuses.

Only liberals can use the word “fair” with a proposal like this.  Oh, but wait, they already have.  Don’t forget that our “progressive” tax system is considered fair by liberals too.

Telling radio stations what they must air is not fair. It should be called the Unfairness Doctrine.

It’s like telling banks what loans they must agree to, and look where that has gotten us.
