Union Resurgence

By Demosthenes | November 17, 2008

What is it about unions being the cause of failure that liberals don’t understand?  Time after time, industries in our country have failed due to the overindulgence of labor unions.  These guys simply strike themselves out of jobs, then moan and groan that their jobs went away.

Just when I thought unions had run their course and were about to disappear into irrelevance, along comes their savior.  We’re hearing a lot these days about bailing out Detroit.  I even wrote about it specifically in a previous post. It’s looking more and more like we’re actually going to bail these guys out.  Big companies can sometimes weather economic slowdowns, but ones that are more susceptible to a lack of consumer confidence are even more vulnerable.

Still, if they were well run, efficient companies, they would have a plan for tough times.  The Big Three did not.  Why?  Because they’ve been completely stifled by the UAW.  The demands of the UAW have finally caught up with them, as all unions eventually do.  Eventually, they simply gorge themselves out of the market.  But they won’t go their natural way if our new socialistic government chips in.  They’ve already guaranteed $25 billion.  Now they want another $25 billion.  Where will much of this money go?  Mostly to pay for pensions and health benefits of retired workers.  Yes, that’s right, right in the pockets of people who are no longer contributing.  There is absolutely nothing about this that is sustainable.

The Big Three’s average pay, including benefits, is $71 per hour–that’s nearly $150,000 per year!  Contrast that number with Toyota, which averages $47 per hour.  I was watching a B-roll clip on the news this morning, of some guy guiding a robot to screw on 5 lug nuts.  I nearly came unglued when I realized this guy was making $150,000 a  year.  C’mon!  $150K a year!  Isn’t there any common sense left in our country.  And knowing he probably doesn’t even have a college education makes it even worse.   Excuse me, but I don’t think those kinds of skills could actually demand that kind of pay in a true, open market.

What really frosts me is that congress will likely go along with this pig-fest.  And yes, even some of our so called Republicans will get on board.   Let these guys–and their unions–fail!
