Death Penalty – The Green Mile
By Locke | December 9, 2008
Most of my life I have been against the death penalty, but not for reasons you might think. My opposition was always because of my lack of faith in our legal system to be absolutely certain that someone is actually guilty. I always tried to imagine myself being wrongly convicted of a crime I did not commit. However, there are cases where that guilt is not in question. Particularly when a confession has taken place.
Now, I know what some of you are thinking. Some people confess to crimes they didn’t commit, what about them? True, but sometimes there are cases where there simply is no doubt. Such is the case with the 9/11 terrorist Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other men charged with coordinating the Sept. 11 attacks. Not only did they confess, but they are unrepentant and even proud of what they did. These are evil men, pure and simple. They’ve even asked to be executed. I say we honor their request. These men should die.
Last week, I was watching the movie “The Green Mile” with my teenage daughter and her friend. It’s about a simple minded black man on death row for a crime he didn’t commit (it has a deeper plot that I won’t go into here). It took place in the 1920s. This movie highlighted several other men on death row, some of which may or may not have been guilty. There were several botched executions with the electric chair, that graphically portrayed the horror of such an act.
My daughter’s friend commented that she could never support the death penalty. She was moved by both the painful method of execution and the death of an innocent man. Even though the movie included scenes and a sub story about another very evil man, the raw emotion of the plight of the innocent was intended to show that the death penalty is a bad thing. It was at that moment that I realized that watching a movie probably persuaded a young lady to take a lifelong position in life about a very controversial act.
I’m one of those guys that always thinks of the right thing to say long after the opportunity presents itself. I wish I had discussed the movie further with my daughter’s friend. I should have pointed out that there are still some very evil people in this world. Some that would perpetrate crimes against others that would make those botched executions look humanitarian. I’m reminded particularly of those cowardly, sick, demented pedophiles that abduct children, then torture them, then kill them. These people should die. And this is where my Christian faith founders. Not only do I want them to die, but I want them to die a slow and painful death, and each minute during that tortuous act, they should be reminded of what they did to innocent children.
Yes, the death penalty is a wretched thing. But sometimes, wretched things are necessary.
